Many employers get caught up in the promised savings offered by rebate guarantees… but little do they know this could actually be costing them money, for several reasons.
The first issue with rebate guarantees is that the most significant rebates are associated with the highest cost drugs. So, while you’re receiving a sometimes-sizeable rebate, your plan is still paying more for a medication than it would have for a much less expensive alternative without a rebate.
The second issue is that set rebate guarantees generally mean that employers are not receiving the full rebate amount. Their pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) retains a portion for themselves.
